As somebody who once had religion in his life, but left it behind and describes himself as an agnostic pantheist (not a full on atheist as you can glean from my description, but I feel most comfortable with atheists these days), I absolutely loved this conversation with John! I have friends and some people I work with in the Freelance world who identify as Christians, but they are hardly at all extreme rightwing evangelicals, and remind me that certainly not all Christians are like that (I certainly was not when I had Christianity thrust into my life when I was a teenager)

John has such a wonderful viewpoint, he’s really damn funny, and I’m interested in reading his book.

I studied science, particularly physics. I'm perhaps going to read out of interest the writings of scientists from two thousand years ago, but I'm certainly not going to believe what they say. Even modern scientists honestly admit that the framework in which they labour is theory that they hope will move closer to truth.

Same with religion, reality, morality: I'm not going to fixate on the two-thousand-plus-year-old stuff in the BuyBull, particularly umpteenth-hand. We're better off reading opinion pieces by modern philosophers, ethicists, sociopoliticists and researchers in dedicated journals.

Halfway through listening to the podcast… Modern researchers and educators of course include people like John Fugelsang. His book isn't out yet, but from the sweet sound of the podcast he discusses, translates and clarifies some of the best and truest ancient principles. It's always worth listening to fugelsang… bird song.

Analogy: arithmetic. Two thousand years ago almost everyone in Europe believed that 1+1=2, always. But for two thousand years before that, in other parts of the world, people knew that it could ALSO equal the square root of 2 … if you move off the one-dimensional number line into two dimensions and triangles.

Just as in maths, our perception of the world is no longer just eat, sleep, mate and defend but now has many more dimensions.

Resurrection is fine, of course, but it's always annoyed me that more emphasis hasn't been on Jesus's basic decency, something that is based on love. Great show!

I get very tired of people "cherry picking" things. I got one just today from a MAGA friend that is fairly religious that was a billboard that says, "I think everyone in this country should speak English." or something to that degree. I guess she doesn't understand that not all people in this country are red, yellow, brown and black and come from "other countries" to here to seek freedom. Maybe they don't speak English, however, there are countries that do teach English and some in say Africa speak the "kings" English which is more proper than what we speak here. People need empathy and compassion NOT HATE THY neighbor. LOVE thy neighbor. I left the church years ago, because I felt that people that went to church (at least the church I went to), cared more about what clothes they wore, what cars they drove and what type of houses that people lived in. It seemed a bit fake to me a long time ago. I do know a woman that is in our dog group that is a beautiful woman and about as true to helping people as anyone I know, there is also another woman that doesn't believe in war and hate.

A great idea to have a Fact Check reference tool to deal with fake “Christians” who justify cruelty

Republicans wear big shiny crosses because that’s the only way to see they’re Christians.

I've added to my Audible wish list so when I get a new credit, this book will be my next to hear.

I also recommend the website of the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty. They advocate for separation of church and state, and as Christians, they carry extra weight in their arguments for why such separation is fundamental to religious liberty. bjconline.org

This episode just keeps getting better and better! I’ve recently been accused of a number of things in a different thread by people who don’t know me. I tried to stay respectful and civil and calmly explain my position (that I believe women should have equal rights and equal standing in society) and they renewed and emboldened their attacks, accused me of not listening, of trying to protect my ego, and eventually to STFU… because I agreed with them. So the part about love being the only path (the guest was dealing with MAGA morons, I was dealing with feminists) is very, very helpful right now. After three rounds and a day and a half I just blocked their asses.
